Navigating the Aged Care System Webinar Series
Navigating aged care can be tricky. People are often unaware of how to begin their journey when entering aged care, and finding information on how to change/update services is not always easy.
As part of the Aged Care System Navigators trials, OPAN is hosting a series of webinars to give a practical introduction on how to enter aged care, including how to contact My Aged Care, arrange an assessment and choose services appropriate to your living situation.
Aged Care System Navigator Trials
A range of trial programs are now being trialled across Australia. These trials aim to ensure that more senior Australians can access support and information about aged care services that better address their individual needs.
The programs offer news ways to find support and information about aged care services to older people who face barriers to access or are particularly vulnerable.
Council on the Ageing (COTA) Australia are leading this initiative, with involvement from 30 delivery organisations around the country. There are trials happening in every state and territory, including in select rural and remote areas.
A total of 62 trials will be delivered:
- 32 information hub trials
- 21 community hub trials
- 9 specialist support worker trials

OPAN’s Involvement in the Trials
As part of the trial, OPAN has developed a chat function on the OPAN website which can deliver online assistance to older people and their families. This will particularly focus on vulnerable groups, especially those living in remote and rural areas.
The chat answers questions about navigating the aged care system and escalates serious matters to one of nine specialist support workers (Intensive Support Navigators) who can offer one-on-one assistance.
All people attempting to navigate aged care are encouraged to use the chat service, whether they are an older person, family member, or carer. My Aged Care is full of answers, but it can be difficult to find them. The bot quickly directs those seeking information them to the right place.
