As we head toward the festive season, with COVID-19 cases on the rise OPAN is encouraging older people to ensure their vaccinations are up to date.
There were more than 2,400 active COVID-19 cases in residential aged care last week, a 77 per cent increase on the previous month.
According to the latest government data, only 27 per cent of people aged 75 years and over – and 39 per cent of aged care residents – have received a 2023 booster dose in the last six months.
The National COVID–19 Community Protection Framework recommends masks and visitor RAT tests when there is high community prevalence and/or outbreaks.
But older people living in residential aged care are entitled to an Essential Visitor, even during lockdowns.
Older people were disproportionately affected by the previous lockdowns. It’s important to balance the risk of infection with the mental and physical impacts of social isolation.
