Rewarding board opportunity for an experienced chairperson
Improve the quality of life of older people
Skills sought include aged care, community and disability services or human rights sector
OPAN is the peak organisation for aged care individual advocacy. OPAN’s free services support older people and their representatives to address issues related to Commonwealth funded aged care services. OPAN is funded by the Australian Government to deliver the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP).
OPAN is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. It is an independent body with no membership or constituency beyond its nine service delivery organisations. This independence is a key strength both for individual advocacy and also for its systemic advocacy. In 2020 OPAN’s income was approximately $13million. OPAN has recently finalised a further four-year funding agreement with the Federal Government until 30 June 2025 which will deliver significant growth.
OPAN’s board comprises directors nominated by each of the nine Older Persons Advocacy Network Members. OPAN has recently reviewed its constitution to reflect a more contemporary structure and the current needs of the organisation. As part of this review, OPAN will appoint its first Independent, Non-Executive Chair.
The board is seeking candidates who are passionate about OPAN’s work and have skills, knowledge and experience in a number of the following areas:
aged care, community and disability services or human rights sector as an executive and/or board member
government agencies and funding
advocacy, particularly in aged care, and
national networks and connections to support aged care advocacy.
In addition, experience as a Chair including a sound working knowledge of corporate governance systems and frameworks, and an ability to apply that knowledge to improve organisation performance is essential. Experience with federated governance models is highly desirable.
The Chair role is remunerated. Reasonable expenses associated with attending to board matters are met by OPAN.
OPAN is seeking a Chair preferably based in Sydney, although strong candidates based elsewhere throughout Australia are encouraged to apply.
