Alternative Approaches to Chemical Restraint
Alternative approaches, such as music therapy, when tailored to the individual, are more effective and provide better outcomes for the older person than chemical restraints. These alternatives are based on a person-centred approach to care, which involves knowing the person, their preferences and their life experiences.
In our live webinar on 30 June, 2021 our panel of experts discussed why investigating the causes of behaviour change are essential for providing better health and wellbeing outcomes. They also explored some alternatives to medications, and how they can be integrated into care environments.
The panel:
- Felicity Baker, Professor and Head of Music Therapy, University of Melbourne
- Steven Macfarlane, Associate Professor, Head of Clinical Services, The Dementia Centre
- Lyn Rob, Dementia Engagement Modelling Lead
- Geoff Rowe, CEO, Aged and Disability Advocacy Australia (ADA Australia)
