Protecting yourself from harm

OPAN regularly hears from older people experiencing or concerned about abuse, and we know these reports represent only a small portion of what actually occurs. Research shows that many older people who experience abuse never seek help. Abuse can be psychological, emotional, physical, sexual, financial or the result of neglect.  Older people often keep abuse hidden because they feel ashamed, fear repercussions, or because the harm is caused by someone they trust, including family members.  If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Elder Abuse Helpline on 1800 353 374.
